SAFE 2B Group Training

Psychological Safety and Mental Health at Work

A 16-week+ program that gives your whole team a shared language, a shared understanding, and the shared tools to build a genuinely psychologically safe culture.

Training and Coaching: Two Paths to the Same Destination

SAFE 2B group training and SAFE 2B coaching work toward identical goals - the Four Program Goals - and cover the same 19-theme curriculum. The difference is in how the learning happens.
Group training builds collective understanding and shared language across a team or organisation. Coaching builds personal mastery in individuals or small groups. Most people and organisations benefit from both: training to establish the common ground, coaching to go deep.
If you are not sure which to start with, the answer is usually: book a discovery call.

Why This Is Different from Every Other Psychological Safety Training

Most psychological safety training teaches people to speak up, be vulnerable, and create trust. These are good goals. But they leave out the most important question: why is it so hard?
The answer is biology. When people feel threatened - criticised, excluded, shamed, or ignored - their nervous systems respond exactly as they would to physical danger. Thinking shuts down. Empathy disappears. People fight, flee, or go silent. No amount of culture workshops changes what the nervous system does under pressure.
SAFE 2B goes to the root. It teaches people what is actually happening in their bodies and minds when safety is threatened - and gives them real tools, not just tips, to recognise it, regulate it, and respond differently.

19 SAFE 2B Themes at a Glance

Approximately 182 learning objectives in the complete SAFE 2B series can be separated into 19 dominant themes.

The Nervous System as the Foundation of Behaviour

Theme 1

Understand that your nervous system runs your reactions automatically - and that it treats emotional threats exactly the same way as physical danger.

Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn Responses

Theme 2

Recognise fight, flight, freeze, and fawning as your body's built-in survival responses - and learn to spot them in yourself and in others, including in the aggression and contempt that show up when someone is using shame to feel safe.

Amygdala Hijack and Attentional Hijack

Theme 3

Explain what an amygdala hijack is, why it shuts down clear thinking, and why people behave in ways they later regret when they are triggered.

Behavioural Loop Patterns (B-Loops)

Theme 4

Understand that most of your everyday reactions are automatic habits formed in childhood - called B-Loops - and that you have the power to begin changing the ones that no longer work for you.

The Relationship Between Thoughts, Beliefs, and Emotions

Theme 5

Discover that how you feel depends on what you believe - and that you have the power to change your emotions by changing the thoughts behind them.

Emotional Responsibility and Agency

Theme 6

Learn that you are responsible for your own emotions - not for how other people feel - and understand why this boundary makes relationships healthier and safer.

Philip's Rule

Theme 7

Apply Philip's Rule to understand that every behaviour - including shaming, bullying, and contempt - is an attempt to move from a painful emotional state toward a more comfortable one, and use this insight to build empathy without making excuses.

Connection, Disconnection, and the Still Face Dynamic

Theme 8

Understand why humans are wired to need connection, why disconnection feels like a life-threatening emergency, and how the pain of being shamed or ostracised reopens the same wound that the Still Face child experiences - the helplessness of being cut off from belonging with no power to restore it.

Emotional Pain, Co-Regulation, and Pre-Verbal Trauma

Theme 9

Recognise emotional pain as real and serious - including shame, which is the specific pain of having a hidden part of yourself exposed - understand where it comes from, and learn why people cope with it the way they do, including ways that look like bad choices from the outside.

Compassion, Validation, and Responding to Distress

Theme 10

Learn how to respond to someone who is hurting or acting out - including someone deploying shame because their own nervous system is in a state of fear - in ways that actually help, using compassion and curiosity rather than judgment or dismissal.

The Compassion Map: Yellow, Blue, and Shadow

Theme 11

Understand the Compassion Map: every person has parts of themselves they show the world (Yellow) and parts they hide out of fear (Blue or Shadow) - and shame is what happens when those hidden parts are exposed, which is why the fear of Blue exposure drives so much of the defensive behaviour we encounter at work and in life.

Hiding, Performing, and Burying the Blue

Theme 12

Recognise the exhausting effort people put into hiding their Blues, the characters they play to seem acceptable, and the personal cost of keeping their Shadow hidden - knowing that shame is waiting on the other side of every slip in the performance.

Shadow Integration

Theme 13

Learn how to take a trait you are ashamed of and find the genuine value in it - shifting it from something dangerous to something you can accept and even appreciate about yourself, which is the deepest and most durable form of protection against shame-based attack.

Judgment and Projection

Theme 14

Understand the difference between healthy judgment - noticing real threats - and projection - unfairly labelling others to avoid confronting those same traits in yourself - and recognise that weaponised shame is projection at its most destructive: punishing others for carrying what you cannot afford to acknowledge in yourself.

Bullying, Shame, and Toxic Dynamics

Theme 15

Recognise that shame is not incidental to bullying and toxic dynamics - it is their engine. Understand what drives them, how they operate at a nervous system level, and how to respond without making things worse, knowing that the person wielding shame is always, themselves, afraid.

Generating Internal Psychological Safety (Self-Regulation)

Theme 16

Build practical tools to feel safe inside yourself, even when the world around you feels threatening - including how to remain grounded and clear when someone is using shame or aggression to destabilise you.

Defining and Cultivating Psychological Safety (Organisational)

Theme 17

Understand what psychological safety really means in a workplace, why it matters for performance and accident prevention, and what it actually takes to create it - including why eliminating shame-based dynamics is not a soft, cultural goal but a hard operational one, and why a culture where no one fears Blue exposure is one where shame has nowhere to ignite.

Belonging, Rejection, and the Circle of Belonging

Theme 18

Understand why belonging is a biological need, why rejection and shame hurt as much as physical pain, and how the fear of being excluded drives much of human behaviour - from everyday conformity all the way to historical tyranny.

Building a Culture of Belonging and Inclusion

Theme 19

Learn what it takes to build a workplace - or any community - where people genuinely feel they belong, where no one needs to fear that their Blues will be exposed or exploited, and commit to specific actions that make that real.
